Last October 19-20, 2018, Industrial Engineering students from UPLB competed in the annually held, IEshikawa 13. Two teams represented UPLB, one in the IExcel: Quiz Show and another in the IExplore: Case Study Competition. Both of which were deemed as the champions in their respective contests.

The UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM) held their annual event, IEshikawa, with the theme PANACEA: Seeing the Bigger Future. On its 13th instalment this year, IEshikawa 13 incorporates the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in their competitions and seminars.

IEshikawa is a 2-day event that was held in the University of the Philippines Diliman. A series of competitions were conducted on the first day including IExcel: Quiz Show, IExplore: Case Study Competition, and IExhibit: Project Fair.



The UPLB Quiz Team was composed of the following members:

On the one hand, the following students are the members of the UPLB Case Study Team:

Both teams were coached by Assistant Professor Angelo C. Ani.

On the second day, simultaneous workshops that tackle the role of Industrial Engineers in achieving each one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals were held. Plenary talks were also given by reputable speakers from different industries. A total of 11 participants from UPLB attended IEshikawa Day 2.

IE students from UPLB clinched top awards in IEshikawa 12 held last November 17-18, 2017 in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

The team of Christian Earl Buna, Yves Alvin Carolasan, Christian Glenn de Jesus, and Franz Christian Velasco bested four other finalists in IExplore: Case Study Competition to take home the top prize. The team presented its distribution and warehousing solutions for a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company experiencing logistics-related issues. On top of the trophy and certificates, the group received a PhP20,000 cash prize from LF Logistics, the main sponsor of the event. The team was coached by Asst. Prof. Angelo C. Ani.

Meanwhile, UPLB fielded two groups for the IExhibit: Project Fair where student projects in Ergonomics, Methods Engineering, and Production Systems were showcased by various nationwide schools. The first team bagged the first runner-up award for their study entitled “Assessment and Reduction of Whole-Body Vibration Experienced by Jeepney Drivers of “Sarao” Jeepneys”. The team was of Carlo Adug, Christian Earl Buna, Cyrus Mendoza, Jericho Joseph Peña, and Daniel James Villamil, together with their IE 134 mentors Asst. Prof. Lizbeth Mariano and Engr. Liezel Caroche.

The second group, on the other hand, took home the second runner up prize. The team of Diane Belchez, Carmella Coria, Princess Roxas, Lezette Umali, and Franz Christian Velasco with their mentors Asst. Prof. Lizbeth Mariano and Asst. Prof. Clarissa Pesigan exhibited their project “Job Analysis and Ergonomic Risk Factors of Laundry Personnel: Machine and Hand washing”. Each of the UPLB project fair team got a certificate and PhP2,000 worth of gift certificate from Frappe La Rou.

IEshikawa is an annual gathering of IE students from all over the Philippines organized by UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM), a student organization based in UP Diliman. This year’s edition, which features the theme Hiraya: Engineering the Backbone of our Nation, hosted academic events on the first day. The second day morning events include workshops on Root Cause Analysis, Risk Management in a Supply Chain, Labor Force Management, Information Systems, Urban Planning, Community Development and many more. In the afternoon, talks tackling Lean Six Sigma and a 3PL company were held.

Both the Inter-University Quiz Contest and Feasibility Study teams of UPLB DIE bagged their respective first place titles in the recently-concluded PIIE-Calabarzon Regional Student Congress held last 27 January 2019 in Sta Rosa Auditorium, Sta Rosa, Laguna.

On the other hand, seniors Yehrica R. Ponce, Alexie Ann R. Quibuyen, and Kyrinne Kate M. Viaje formed the UPLB Feasibility Study Team. Viaje likewise bagged the Best Presentor in the competition. Using their feasibility study entitled Cleaner, Better Air: Ipa-Filter, they bested nine other feasibility study entries from different schools. The UPLB Feasibility Study Team was mentored by Asst. Prof. Clarissa M. Pesigan.

Both teams will advance to the national level of the competitions.


This year’s congress theme is AMPLIFY: Industrial Engineers' Potentials as Transistors Towards Greater Heights. On its 9th installment, seminars were given by two reputable speakers from different industries. Also, a series of competitions were conducted including Inter-University Quiz Contest, Research Competition, Feasibility Study Competition, Poster-Making Contest, Telentadong IE, and Mr. and Ms. PIIE CALABARZON.

UPLB IE graduates delivered an impressive performance in the recent Certificate in Industrial Engineering (CIE) exam simultaneously held last November 25, 2018 held in UP Diliman, Quezon City, and University of San Jose Recoletos, Magallanes Street, Cebu City.

Engr. Marc Edelbert S. Villanueva, who completed the BS IE program in 4 ½ years, scored 87.34% to lead the list of CIE passers. This secures a back-to-back Top 1 finish for UPLB in two consecutive years.

Seven more UPLB graduates landed in Top 10, making UPLB the most represented school in the leaderboard: Engr. John Bernard M. Croox, 85.70%, Top 2; Engr. Nigel Fredric R. Pantastico, 85.14%, Top 3; Engr. Maetien M. Dayto, 84.58%, Top 4; Engr. Alyssa Mikaela S. Ronquillo, 84.58%, Top 4; Angela Ira B. Ramos, 82.34%, Top 6; Christian Earl J. Buna, 81.21%, Top 9, and; John Russel L. Macatangay, 80.93%, Top 10.

The school likewise maintains 100% passing rate or 17 passers based on department tracking. The national passing rate was reported to be 58.82%.

The CIE exam is administered yearly by the IE Certification Board (IECB) under the supervision of the PIIE to professionalize the IE field. Passers are entitled to be included in the ASEAN Registry of Engineers as Associate ASEAN Engineers. The oath-taking ceremony is tentatively scheduled on February 2019 at Marriott Hotel, Resorts World.
