Academic Year 2016 – 2017 proved to be a productive year for the IE Department’s foray into inter-university academic competitions as it manages to finish in the Top 3 of every event it participated in.

The department fielded one team each in the Quiz and Case Study competitions of IEshikawa XI organized by UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM), a student organization based in UP Diliman.

The UPLB IE Quiz Team defeated 14 other universities to bag the very first IEshikawa Quiz Competition crown. The UPLB team is composed of Carlo Adug, Christian Earl Buna, and John Bernard Croox, all fourth year students.

Meanwhile, the UPLB Case Study Team landed in third place. After earlier claiming a spot in the Finals, the group presented its solution to a real-life case together with four other finalists. Fifth year students Geraleen Nicole Gaytano and Maria Jenelle Rose Melanio, and fourth year student Franz Christian Velasco represented the department in the case study competition.

Both competitions were held last November 11, 2016 in UP Diliman. The main talks of IEshikawa, including the awarding of certificated and cash prizes for the winners of the academic competitions, followed the next day.

Duplicating its performance in the previous edition, the UPLB Quiz Team bagged second place in the 2016 Regional IE Quiz. IEshikawa quiz champions Adug, Buna, and Croox were joined by fellow fourth year students Nigel Fredric Pantastico and Franz Christian Velasco in representing UPLB in the event.

Batangas State University (BatSU) emerged victorious as it garnered the highest score after the three quiz rounds. BatSU is the quiz champion in the previous two years, while UPLB improved from 3rd in 2015 to 2nd in 2016. The PIIE Regional Congress was held last February 4, 2017 in University of Batangas.

In the national level, the same UPLB Quiz Team clinched third place behind IE Quiz powerhouses UP Diliman and De La Salle University Manila, who placed champion and runner up, respectively. UPLB was initially tied with regional rival BatSU. UPLB took home the third place after dueling with BatSU in the clincher round.

After placing 5th-6th last year in the national level, UPLB once again returned to the Top 3 podium this year, reproducing a similar feat 2 years ago.

Assistant Professor Angelo Ani, head of the Student Progress and Academic Contests Committee of the IE Department, trained the UPLB participants in the academic competitions.
